Niccolò della Casa made this engraving around 1548 after Michelangelo's Last Judgment fresco in the Sistine Chapel. Between 1536 and 1541 Michelangelo painted the Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel for Popes Clement VII and Paul III. Its swirling mass of figures, rising to heaven or falling to hell around a commanding Christ, astonished and shocked viewers, and engravers quickly spread the composition across Europe. It reproduces the upper central section of the fresco, with Christ and the Virgin among the saints. It measures about 47.6 x 51.8 cm.
