About Michelangelo and The Climbers (Raimondi Engraving) (1510)

Marcantonio Raimondi, the leading engraver of Renaissance Rome, made this engraving in 1510 after figures in Michelangelo's cartoon for the Battle of Cascina, setting them in a landscape borrowed from a print by Lucas van Leyden. In 1504 Florence commissioned Michelangelo to paint the Battle of Cascina in the great council hall of the Palazzo della Signoria, opposite Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari. He completed only the full-size cartoon, showing soldiers surprised while bathing in the river Arno; it was studied by a whole generation of artists before it was cut up and lost. It is an engraving and measures about 29 x 23 cm. It is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
