About Albrecht Dürer and The Fourth Knot (1505)
Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) made this woodcut around 1505–1507, copying one of Leonardo da Vinci's celebrated knot designs during his interest in Italian art. Leonardo designed a celebrated series of intricate interlaced 'knot' patterns, engraved around 1490–1500 and inscribed with the words Academia Leonardi Vinci. The designs circulated widely in the Renaissance and were copied by Albrecht Dürer as woodcuts, and they remain some of the most hypnotic ornamental images of the period.
