About Caravaggio and Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto (Detail) (1597)

Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto around 1597 on the ceiling of a small room in the villa of his patron Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, where the cardinal practised alchemy. The three gods, linked with air, water and earth, surround a sphere symbolising the universe, and Caravaggio is said to have used himself as the model for all three. It is his only known ceiling painting and was painted in oil directly on the plaster. It remains in place in the Casino dell'Aurora, also known as Villa Aurora, in Rome.
