About Caravaggio and Medusa Murtola (1597)
Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted this first version of Medusa around 1596–1597. It takes its name from the poet Gaspare Murtola, who wrote verses in praise of Caravaggio's Medusa in the early 1600s. Scientific study in recent decades, which revealed a sketched design beneath the paint, has led many experts to accept it as the artist's first version. It measures about 48 cm in diameter and is in a private collection.
