About Caravaggio and Saint Matthew and the Angel (1602)

Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted this first version of Saint Matthew and the Angel in 1602 for the altar of the Contarelli Chapel in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. The clergy rejected it, reportedly finding the saint too coarse, and Caravaggio painted the second version that still hangs in the chapel. The first version was bought by Vincenzo Giustiniani and later entered the Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum in Berlin, where it was destroyed by fire in 1945, at the end of the Second World War. This print is made from a historic photograph of the lost painting.
