About Caravaggio and Supper at Emmaus (1601)
Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted Supper at Emmaus in 1601 for the Roman nobleman Ciriaco Mattei, at the height of his fame in Rome. Unusually, he showed Christ young and beardless, which helps explain why the disciples had not recognised him on the road. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 141 x 196 cm, it is in the National Gallery in London.
