About Caravaggio and The Crowning with Thorns (1603)

Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted The Crowning with Thorns around 1602–1604 in Rome. It is now known to come from the collection of the banker Vincenzo Giustiniani, one of the artist's most important patrons, and it was acquired in Rome in the early 19th century for the imperial collection in Vienna. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 127 x 166 cm, it is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
