About Edvard Munch and Ashes (1925)

Edvard Munch (1863–1944) painted this picture in 1925. In 1916 Munch bought the Ekely estate on the outskirts of Kristiania, where he lived and worked until his death in 1944. In his later years he painted landscapes, winter nights and new versions of the great motifs of his youth, often working outdoors in all weathers. Munch first painted Ashes in 1894 as part of the Frieze of Life; this is a later version of the motif. It measures about 140 x 200 cm. It is in the Munch Museum in Oslo.
