About Gaudenzio Ferrari and Christ Rising from the Tomb (1540)

Gaudenzio Ferrari (c. 1471–1546) was a painter and sculptor from Valduggia in the Duchy of Milan, active across Lombardy and Piedmont, whose later style was shaped by the Milanese followers of Leonardo da Vinci. He painted this panel around 1540 as the centrepiece of the high altarpiece of the church of San Pietro at Maggianico, near Lecco on Lake Como, flanked by Saints Roch and Christopher. Painted in oil on poplar and measuring about 152.4 x 84.5 cm, it was bought by the National Gallery in London in 1895, together with a panel of Saint Andrew from the same altarpiece.
