About Giotto and Death of the Virgin (1310)

Giotto (c. 1267–1337) painted the Death of the Virgin around 1310 for the church of Ognissanti in Florence, where it was greatly admired by later artists. The scene, also known as the Dormition, comes from early Christian legends about Mary's last days rather than from the Bible. Painted in tempera on poplar panel and measuring about 76 x 180 cm, it is in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
