Over the centuries it survived iconoclasm, fire, war and theft: panels were taken to Paris under Napoleon, sold to Berlin and hidden in an Austrian salt mine during the Second World War. The Ghent Altarpiece, also known as the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, was completed in 1432 for the chapel of Joos Vijd and Elisabeth Borluut in the church now known as St Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent. An inscription on its frame says it was begun by Hubert van Eyck and finished by his brother Jan. Painted in oil with astonishing precision, its twelve panels are among the founding masterpieces of European art.
