About Jan van Eyck and Saint Jerome in His Study (1442)

This panel is dated 1442, the year after Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) died, so it was probably begun by him and completed by his workshop. A small painting of Saint Jerome by Van Eyck is recorded in the 1492 inventory of Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence, and it is often identified with this work. Painted in oil on paper laid on oak and measuring about 20.6 x 13.3 cm, it is held in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
