About Jan van Eyck and The Annunciation Diptych (1433)

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) painted this small diptych around 1433–1435. Painting in grisaille — shades of grey — was traditionally used on the outer wings of altarpieces, but here it becomes a showpiece in its own right, an artist's challenge to the sculptors of his day. Painted in oil on panel, each wing measures about 39 x 24 cm. It is held in the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
