About Jan van Eyck and The Annunciation (1434)

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) painted this work around 1434–1436, probably as the left wing of a small triptych. Every detail carries meaning: the old Romanesque windows above and the new Gothic ones below suggest the passage from the Old Testament to the New. Once in the Hermitage in St Petersburg, it was sold by the Soviet government in 1930–1931 to Andrew Mellon. Painted in oil and later transferred from panel to canvas, it measures about 90.2 x 34.1 cm and is held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
