About Jan van Eyck and The Lucca Madonna (1437)

Jan van Eyck (c. 1390–1441) painted this work around 1437. Its name comes from Charles Louis of Bourbon, Duke of Lucca, who owned it in the 19th century. The throne with lions recalls the throne of King Solomon, a symbol of wisdom often linked to the Virgin. Painted in oil on panel and measuring about 65.7 x 49.6 cm, it is held in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
