About Johannes Vermeer and Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window (1659)

Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) painted this picture around 1657–1659. For centuries the Cupid on the back wall was hidden under overpaint added after the artist's death; a restoration completed in 2021 uncovered it, transforming the meaning of the scene. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 83 x 65 cm, it is in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
