About Johannes Vermeer and The Art of Painting (1666)
Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) painted The Art of Painting around 1666–1668 and kept it until his death, which suggests it held a special meaning for him; his widow tried in vain to keep it from creditors. In 1940 it was bought for Adolf Hitler, and it was returned to Austria after the Second World War. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 120 x 100 cm, it is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
