About Johannes Vermeer and The Geographer (1669)
Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) painted The Geographer in 1669 as a companion to The Astronomer, using the same model, who some have suggested may be the Delft scientist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. It is one of the few works Vermeer signed and dated. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 52 x 45 cm, it is in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
