About Johannes Vermeer and The Procuress (1656)
Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) painted The Procuress in 1656; it is one of only three paintings he signed and dated. The scene belongs to a popular Dutch type of brothel picture, and the smiling man on the left is often thought to be a self-portrait. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 143 x 130 cm, it is in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
