About Leonardo da Vinci and A Bearded Man Confronted by a Grotesque Profile (1492)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1492. Leonardo delighted in exaggerated, comic and grotesque faces. These caricature-like heads, widely copied in the following centuries, explore the extremes of human appearance and character, and they influenced artists across Europe. It is drawn in pen and ink and measures about 17.2 x 12.4 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
