About Leonardo da Vinci and A Costume Study of a Prisoner (1517)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1517–1518. In his final years at the French court, around 1517–1518, Leonardo designed costumes and characters for festivities and pageants. These elegant drawings of masqueraders show his love of theatre, fantasy and flowing fabric. It measures about 18.4 x 12.7 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
