About Leonardo da Vinci and A Design for an Equestrian Monument (1485)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1485. Leonardo worked on two colossal bronze horse monuments in Milan — one for Francesco Sforza in the 1480s–90s and another for the general Gian Giacomo Trivulzio around 1508–1510. Neither was ever cast, but his designs of rearing and pacing horses on grand pedestals are among his most ambitious sculptural ideas. It is drawn in metalpoint and measures about 11.6 x 10.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
