About Leonardo da Vinci and Adoration of the Magi (1481)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was commissioned in 1481 by the Augustinian friars of San Donato a Scopeto, just outside Florence, to paint this altarpiece, probably inspired by the prophecy of Isaiah. He stopped work in 1482 when he left for Milan, and the friars later turned to Filippino Lippi, who completed his own Adoration in 1496. Leonardo's unfinished panel stayed in the house of Amerigo Benci, father of Ginevra de' Benci. Measuring about 246 x 243 cm, it entered the Uffizi in 1670, spent time at the Villa di Castello, and returned to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence in 1794, where it can be seen after a major restoration.
