About Leonardo da Vinci and An Ox and Ass, and Other Studies of Asses (1478)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1478–1480. Leonardo filled thousands of sheets with drawings and notes on art, science and engineering. Each one offers a direct view into the working mind of the Renaissance's most curious genius. It measures about 16.4 x 17.7 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
