About Leonardo da Vinci and Apocalyptic Scenes, with Notes (1517)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1517–1518. In the last years of his life, around 1513–1518, Leonardo repeatedly drew and described cataclysmic storms overwhelming the earth. These visionary deluge drawings, made mostly in black chalk, are among the most original works of the Renaissance — part scientific study of wind, water and debris, part personal meditation on the power of nature. It measures about 30 x 20.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
