About Leonardo da Vinci and Designs for a Fountain II (1513)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1513. Leonardo worked throughout his career as an engineer, designing weapons, machines, pumps and mechanisms for his patrons in Milan, Florence and France. His technical drawings show an inventor's mind at work and are admired today as beautiful designs in their own right. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 17.2 x 6.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
