About Leonardo da Vinci and Designs for Gun-barrels and Mortars (1485)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1485. Leonardo worked throughout his career as an engineer, designing weapons, machines, pumps and mechanisms for his patrons in Milan, Florence and France. His technical drawings show an inventor's mind at work and are admired today as beautiful designs in their own right. It is drawn in pen and ink and measures about 28.2 x 20.5 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
