About Leonardo da Vinci and Head of Leda (1504)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1504. Leonardo's studies of heads and faces reveal his fascination with expression, light and character. Drawn from life and from imagination, they range from idealised young faces to weathered old men, and they influenced generations of artists. It is drawn in pen and ink and measures about 17.7 x 14.7 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
