About Leonardo da Vinci and Horses' Legs (1517)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1517–1518. Horses were one of Leonardo's great passions. He studied their anatomy, proportions and movement for his equestrian monuments in Milan and for the battle scenes of the Battle of Anghiari, producing some of the finest animal drawings of the Renaissance. It measures about 25 x 17.4 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
