About Leonardo da Vinci and La Belle Ferronnière (1490)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) painted this portrait in Milan in the 1490s. It belonged to the French royal collection of Francis I and was later mistakenly named after a 'belle ferronnière' — the wife of an ironmonger — through confusion with another painting. The sitter's true identity is unknown, though she is often thought to be connected with the court of Ludovico Sforza. The portrait, about 63 x 45 cm, is in the Louvre in Paris.
