About Leonardo da Vinci and Mona Lisa (1503)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) began the portrait around 1503 in Florence. The sitter is believed to be Lisa Gherardini, wife of the silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo, which is why the painting is also called La Gioconda. Leonardo kept working on it for years and took it with him to France, where it entered the collection of King Francis I. Painted in oil on a poplar panel of about 77 x 53 cm, it was stolen from the Louvre in 1911 and recovered in 1913, and it remains the museum's most visited treasure.
