Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) drew these sketches around 1480–1485, at the end of his first Florentine period and the start of his years in Milan. They seem connected with a lost painting of the Virgin adoring the Child, known from several contemporary copies, and with the kneeling Virgin of the Virgin of the Rocks. The sheet is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
