About Leonardo da Vinci and Studies of an Infant II (1490)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1490–1492. Leonardo worked out his religious compositions in many rapid sketches and careful studies, trying different poses for the Virgin, the Christ Child, the infant Baptist and the saints before settling on a final design. It is drawn in red chalk and measures about 13.8 x 19.5 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
