About Leonardo da Vinci and Studies of Dragons (1478)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1478–1480. Leonardo produced allegories, emblems and designs for spectacles for the courts of Milan and France — symbolic images about fortune, loyalty and power, sometimes combined with ideas for theatre and festivities. It measures about 15.9 x 24.3 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
