About Leonardo da Vinci and Studies of Insects (1480)
This sheet is by Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519). In the years after 1505 Leonardo made a series of exquisite plant studies, many in red chalk, partly as research for his lost painting of Leda and the Swan. They combine a botanist's accuracy with an artist's feeling for rhythm and growth. It is drawn in pen and ink. It is preserved in the Biblioteca Reale in Turin.
