About Leonardo da Vinci and Studies of Men in Action (1508)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1508. In 1503 the Florentine government commissioned Leonardo to paint the Battle of Anghiari in the great council hall of the Palazzo della Signoria. The mural was never finished and was later covered over, so his powerful drawings of fighting men, horses and nude figures made in these years are our best record of that lost masterpiece. It measures about 20.1 x 13 cm. Like Leonardo's other drawings at Windsor, it passed after his death to his pupil Francesco Melzi, then to the sculptor Pompeo Leoni and to Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, before entering the Royal Collection by around 1690.
