About Leonardo da Vinci and Study of a Perpetual Wheel with a Variable Set Up (1487)

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this work around 1487–1490. Like many engineers of his time, Leonardo studied designs for perpetual-motion machines such as self-turning wheels and self-powered pumps. Unusually, he concluded that such machines could never work, and his careful analysis of why they fail is an early lesson in physics. It is preserved in the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan.
