About Leonardo da Vinci and The Drapery of a Kneeling Figure (1491)
Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) made this study around 1491–1494 while redesigning the angel for the second version of the Virgin of the Rocks, begun in the early 1490s and installed in San Francesco Grande in Milan in 1508. Compared with the earlier Paris version, the angel became more upright, with a new swag of drapery from shoulder to hip — the passage of the London painting where Leonardo's own hand is easiest to see. Drawn with brush and black ink with white heightening and measuring about 21.3 x 15.9 cm, the sheet came through Francesco Melzi, Pompeo Leoni and the Earl of Arundel to the Royal Collection by 1690.
