The Virgin twists to receive the Christ Child from Joseph, the three figures locked together like a sculpted group, while nude youths lounge on a wall behind and the young Saint John looks on. About Michelangelo and Doni Tondo (1506)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) painted the Doni Tondo around 1506–1508 for the Florentine merchant Agnolo Doni, probably to celebrate his marriage to Maddalena Strozzi or the birth of their first child. It is still in its original carved frame, thought to have been designed by Michelangelo himself. Painted in tempera on panel and measuring about 120 cm in diameter, it is in the Uffizi Galleries in Florence.
