About Michelangelo and Fortification Study (1528)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this architectural drawing around 1528–1529. In 1528–1529, when Florence prepared to defend itself against the armies of the Pope and the Emperor, Michelangelo was appointed governor of the city's fortifications. His bold, star-shaped bastion designs, drawn in ink and wash, look strikingly modern and are among the most remarkable military drawings of the Renaissance. It is in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
