About Michelangelo and Group of Soldiers (1546)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this charcoal drawing around 1546. From 1542 to 1550 Michelangelo painted his last frescoes, the Conversion of Saul and the Crucifixion of Saint Peter, in the Pauline Chapel of the Vatican for Pope Paul III. Their crowded, sombre scenes reflect the deep religious feeling of his old age.
