About Michelangelo and Study for the Last Judgment (1534)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this sketch around 1534, at the very start of his work on the Last Judgment, and the back of the sheet carries a study of the Risen Christ. Between 1536 and 1541 Michelangelo painted the Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel for Popes Clement VII and Paul III. Its swirling mass of figures, rising to heaven or falling to hell around a commanding Christ, astonished and shocked viewers, and engravers quickly spread the composition across Europe. It is drawn in black chalk. It is in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence.
