About Michelangelo and Study of a Mourning Woman (1500)
Michelangelo (1475–1564) made this pen and ink drawing around 1500–1505. Michelangelo trained briefly in the Florentine workshop of Domenico Ghirlandaio and then in the sculpture garden of Lorenzo de' Medici. As a young man he taught himself by copying the solid, draped figures of Giotto and Masaccio, and his early pen drawings already show a sculptor's feeling for weight and volume. It is drawn in pen and ink and measures about 26 x 16.5 cm.
