About Michelangelo and The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487)

Michelangelo (1475–1564) painted The Torment of Saint Anthony around 1487–1488, when he was only about twelve or thirteen years old, basing it on an engraving by the German artist Martin Schongauer. His early biographers report that he studied the scales and colours of fish at the market to paint the demons. Painted in tempera on panel and measuring about 47 x 35 cm, it is in the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
