About Paul Cézanne and The Village of Gardanne (1885)
Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) painted this work in 1885, during his 'constructive' period. From the late 1870s Cézanne developed his 'constructive' brushstroke — small, parallel touches of colour that build up form like masonry. Working mostly in Provence, at L'Estaque, Gardanne and the Jas de Bouffan, he wanted to make of Impressionism something solid and durable, like the art of the museums. It is painted in oil. It is held in the Brooklyn Museum in New York.
