The huge boar twists to face Meleager even as hounds cling to its bristly hide; beneath its hooves lie a fallen hound and the hunter Ancaeus. About Peter Paul Rubens and The Calydonian Boar Hunt (1611)

Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) painted this panel around 1611–1612, a few years after returning to Antwerp from a long stay in Italy, drawing on ancient sarcophagi and statues he had studied there. In the myth, the goddess Diana sent a giant boar to ravage Calydon, and Prince Meleager gathered heroes to hunt it, later presenting its head to Atalanta. With this work Rubens established the theme of epic combat between man and beast that he returned to throughout his career. Painted in oil on panel and measuring about 59 x 90 cm, it belongs to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
