About Peter Paul Rubens and The Fall of Phaeton (1605)

Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), one of the greatest painters of the 17th century, began this picture as a young artist in Rome around 1604–1605, after travelling through Italy and studying Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Tintoretto and Caravaggio. He reworked it over the following years, and technical research shows at least three stages of changes. The story comes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 98.4 x 131.2 cm, it passed through several English collections, including that of the Earls of Caledon, before the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. acquired it in 1990.
