About Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Head of a Young Girl (1890)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) painted this work around 1890, during his mature 'pearly' period. In the 1890s Renoir returned to a softer, warmer manner, often called his 'pearly' period, with glowing colour and gentle, flowing brushwork. In 1892 the French state bought Young Girls at the Piano, and his growing family — his wife Aline, their sons and the nursemaid Gabrielle Renard — became his favourite models. It is painted in oil on canvas and measures about 42.6 x 33.3 cm. It is held in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
