About Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Luncheon of the Boating Party (1881)
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) painted this masterpiece in 1880–1881 on the balcony of the Maison Fournaise, a restaurant on an island in the Seine at Chatou that was popular with boaters. His friends posed for the figures, including the painter Gustave Caillebotte, seated at the lower right. The painting was shown at the seventh Impressionist exhibition in 1882. Painted in oil on canvas and measuring about 130 x 176 cm, it is held in the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
